Moving Expense Tax Deductions
You may be able to deduct moving expenses on your tax return, if you move to a new home because of a change in your principle workplace. You can deduct expenses when moving outside the U.S. for work, as long as you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Use IRS form 3903 to calculate moving expense deductions such as:
- Cost of moving household goods
- Packing and crating
- Mileage to your destination
- Insurance
- Cost of lodging (not including meals)
Employees and self-employed workers are eligible for the moving deduction, as long as your moving expenses meet these criteria:
- Your move must be closely related in both time and place to the start of work at your new job location.
- Your new principle workplace much be at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your old workplace.
- If you are an employee, you must work full time in the general area of your new workplace for at least 39 weeks during the 12 months after you move. Self-employed taxpayers should consult a tax advisor for deduction details.
