6 Tips to Pack Better for Your Next Move

Dislike packing? You’re not alone. It’s probably the most unpopular part of moving a household. After all, living in a new location can be exciting and the actual transportation of belongings isn’t that bad. But packing? That’s another story.

Fortunately, there are a few ways to make it more enjoyable and efficient. Let’s cover some tips to help you pack better for your next move.

  1. Label and Color-Code

The last thing you want is to have all your boxes look the same as you rummage through each of them blindly looking for the specific item you need to unpack. Not only is labeling a good idea (based on room or item type), but color-coding can help you save even more time. You could use orange for fabrics, red for fragile keepsakes and blue for glassware. Personalize in a way that makes it most enjoyable.

  1. Consider Transparency

You don’t have to just use standard cardboard boxes. Consider clear boxes or bins to help you easily identify the contents inside each of them. Many of these bins/boxes are stackable, so you can save space when you’re done with them. If you can’t afford larger transparent boxes, smaller ones can help you easily organize personal items and your suitcases.

  1. Purge As Necessary

The fewer items you have to pack, the easier it will be—and the less likely packing will be such a drain. Whether you donate, sell or trash unnecessary belongings, do it ahead of time so you’ll be better prepared for an efficient packing experience

  1. Be Safe With Sharp Objects

Knives and other dangerous items are always tricky. You can wrap them in bubble wrap, keep them securely in the knife block or pack them separately (using small boxes or oven mitts to protect yourself). Whatever you do, don’t just throw sharp objects unsecured in an open box.

  1. Go Unconventional

Many items can serve multiple purposes, such as using linens or T-shirts to protect fragile items like dishes. Towels can act as dividers and wine boxes are great for storing and organizing shoes. Think outside the box (no pun intended).

  1. Disassemble When You Can

You can save space and prevent damage to furniture, appliances and electrical equipment when you disassemble them before your move. Wrap the bigger pieces with protective material and keep smaller components (like nuts and bolts) secured in a plastic bag.
