There’s a lot of work involved in moving, but with plenty of preparation and packing well in advance of the big day, you can make the move go a lot smoother. While most household items are fairly easy to move, particularly if you have a few extra hands to help, there are others that are either too fragile or cumbersome to simply pack up and hope for the best.
Although many musical instruments are complicated to pack, pianos are often among the most difficult items to move of all. They’re enormous and fragile and, in the case of a grand piano, too large to fit into many smaller trucks or trailers or through doorways. You may want to consider paying for a professional piano removal service, since they will move it safely, perhaps with the help of a crane.
Many household electronics are fragile and cumbersome, particularly large flat-screen televisions, which sometimes even take two people to handle. One wrong move, however, and your expensive electronics could be rendered useless. As such, it’s always a good idea to move it using the packaging it came in if at all possible. If not, try wrapping it in blankets and placing it in a box with plenty of extra padding.
Not only are fish tanks extremely fragile: your fish likely won’t enjoy being subjected to changing temperatures or splashed around during the move. As such, many movers opt to give away larger aquariums. However, if you intend to keep your fish, you’ll need to transfer the animals to a suitable holding container before draining the aquarium, dismantling it and moving it with the utmost care.
Moving art safely requires some additional preparation and careful packing in particular. Since many artworks include glass, you should use a combination of bubble wrap and packing paper, and use extra tape on the cardboard boxes around the sides to reduce the risk of getting nicks in the frame. Always make sure you have plenty of packaging available, and use boxes that are larger than the artwork itself.
