5 Maintenance Tasks to Complete Before You Move

5 Maintenance Tasks to Complete Before You Move

Preparation is the key to success. We’re sure someone has said that at some point, but it’s not necessarily a famous quote. It’s just common sense.

Your move is no different. These five maintenance tasks to complete before you move will help ensure your relocation starts off on the right foot.

1. Get a Professional Deep Cleaning

The best time to clean your home is when it’s empty. Before you start moving your belongings in, invest in a deep cleaning if it wasn’t negotiated in the home deal. Spruce up the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, office and any other area that gets used often. This will give you a fresh start and make the initial stages of home living more enjoyable. (If you’re in a time crunch, consider renting a portable storage container and wait to unload until the house is clean.)

2. Check and Clear Out Storage Spaces

The attic, crawl space and other certain areas get overlooked on occasion by previous residents. Check these areas to make sure there aren’t any belongings in them, as you might not be able to move in your items if the spaces are already occupied.

3. Check Filters and Vents

Change out air filters and consider cleaning the vents (including the dryer vent). Many people experience allergies and air quality problems when changing residences and you don’t want to make it worse by moving into a home that is full of dirty vents that haven’t been cleaned in who knows how long.

4. Change the Locks

A good maintenance idea related to security is to change out the locks for all access points. You don’t know who has keys or access to your home and changing the locks will give you peace of mind in your new residence. Keep valuables locked away until you do so, but try to get this task done as quickly as possible.

5. Refresh the Floors and Walls

Finally, you may want to consider cleaning and/or replacing the flooring in your home, especially if it’s carpet or damaged wood. Both of these situations can lead to mold or hide damage that will cost more down the road. As for your walls, giving them a fresh coat of paint can do wonders for your new home’s first impression and overall aesthetics.
