What Your Moving Priority List Should Look Like

We all have different priorities in life. For some, faith is their biggest priority. For others, it’s family. Still others consider career or pleasure the top priority. Your life priorities are up to you, but when it comes to other things like moving and storage, there’s a right and wrong way to prioritize.

After all, some people get their priorities mixed up. But we’re here to help you identify what is most and least important in a move as we believe this is what you’re moving priority list should look like

Moving Priority List

There’s both a list of tasks to complete before, during and after a move, as well as a specific order to how they are completed. As a company that has been serving Dallas-Fort Worth since 1991 and has completed more than 245,000 moves, we’ve narrowed down what an ideal moving priority list should look like:

  1. Research: First, do your research on where you’ll be moving and all of the lifestyle changes you’ll need to make there, from schools and taxes or rent rates to resale potential and proximity to friends and family.
  2. Budget: Once you know where you’re going, it’s time to create a moving budget. You don’t want to just adjust as you go, as costs can create stress and uncertainty if you don’t know how high they’ll go. Your budget also dictates how many services you hire and how many you can do yourself. Crunch some numbers and use your budget for the other tasks in this priority list.
  3. Belongings: Next, your belongings will have a big impact on your budget, so try to limit them as much as possible. Downsize by getting rid of any items you don’t need (selling, trashing or giving them away). The less you’ll have to move, the cheaper it will be.
  4. Hiring: You can hire for some or all of the following moving services: packing, loading, transportation, unloading and unpacking. You might want to do some of these yourself, but if your budget allows, you can hire a professional moving company to handle it all.
  5. Utilities/paperwork: This could also be completed earlier in this list if you desire, but you need to get utilities and paperwork completed early (preferably before packing). Schedule the end date for your old utilities, the start date for your new ones and consider any deposits involved as well. Don’t forget about school records, drivers licenses and other important paperwork, either!
  6. Packing and loading: After you’ve completed all of the above, now it’s time to start packing up your belongings, being sure to keep them organized and protected. Also, invest in, or rent, a furniture dolly if you’re moving items yourself.
  7. Transport: Once you’re packed and the moving truck is loaded, your belongings are transported to your new destination. If you hire a moving company, this is an easy part, but if you’re doing it yourself, this can be the most stressful task on the list.
  8. Unloading and unpacking: Once you’ve reached your new destination, you can unload and unpack your belongings, then enjoy your new home and community. Good job!
