Schedule
-
How do I schedule my move?
Once you’ve received a quote from one of our moving specialists, you’ll be paired with an IMS Relocation moving coordinator who will help you schedule and plan every detail of your move. We recommend providing as much advance notice as possible—especially during the busy summer season—to ensure your preferred dates are available.
-
How far in advance should I schedule my move?
The sooner, the better! For standard residential moves, we recommend scheduling at least 4–6 weeks in advance. This is especially important during peak moving season (May–September, with June through August being the busiest months). For more complex commercial moves or international relocations, we suggest booking 6–8 weeks in advance. Early scheduling helps ensure availability and allows plenty of time to plan every detail of your move.
-
Can I reschedule my move?
Yes! We understand that plans can change, and your move can be rescheduled if needed. To give you the best chance of securing your preferred new date, please notify us as early as possible. Keep in mind that last-minute changes—especially within 24 hours of your scheduled move—may result in additional charges since your crew has already been assigned and dispatched.
-
Will I be charged if I cancel my move?
We know life happens and do offer cancellations. Any fees will be contingent on the timeline of cancellation and the type of move being cancelled. We are careful to reserve our schedule and resources for your move and encourage you to honor that commitment. However, given 48 hours, we can cancel or reschedule most moves without any financial penalties. Moves cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, may be subject to attempt fees or minimum charges.
-
What’s the best time of year to move?
School schedules, holidays, and weather patterns all impact moving demand. The busiest season is May through September, with June, July, and August being peak months. If your schedule allows, consider moving during the off-peak months (late fall or winter). During this time, we usually have more scheduling flexibility and may be able to offer cost savings.
-
What should I do if there’s bad weather on my moving day?
DFW weather can be unpredictable, but with over 30 years of experience, IMS Relocation is prepared to handle moves in nearly any condition. In cases of extreme weather, your move may need to be delayed or rescheduled for safety. If that happens, we’ll notify you as early as possible. Otherwise, if you don’t hear from us, you can plan for your move to proceed as scheduled.
Moving Prep
-
How can I prepare my home for moving day?
Start by reviewing our moving-day checklist to stay organized. A few key steps include: Declutter early – Separate items you no longer need, want to donate, or plan to dispose of. Be sure to keep these clearly separated from what you intend for us to move. Label boxes by room and contents – This helps our team place them in the right rooms at your new home or business. Color labels are also recommended. Set aside essentials – Keep toiletries, medications, important documents, and other necessities clearly labeled and separate so they’re easy to access during and after your move. These steps will help moving day run smoothly and efficiently.
-
How can I prepare my business for moving day?
Every business relocation is unique, and we’ll provide customized guidance to fit your specific needs. In general, we recommend scheduling 6–8 weeks in advance to allow time for planning and preparation. Here are some key steps to consider: Notify stakeholders early – Inform employees, vendors, and service providers about your upcoming move. Protect your data – Backup all systems to an off-site location and secure any sensitive files well before moving day. Inventory and organize – Take stock of your equipment and pack items safely. Label all boxes by department so our team can deliver them to the correct area at your new location. Assign moving roles – Designate temporary responsibilities for employees to assist with packing and unpacking, helping reduce downtime. Review lease agreements – Double-check the terms of both your current and new spaces, and confirm that utilities will be ready when you arrive. These steps, along with IMS Relocation’s expertise, will help ensure a smooth transition for your business.
-
How can I protect sensitive data during a move?
We recommend taking extra precautions with all data-storage devices during a relocation. Here are some best practices: Back up your data – Ensure all computers, tablets, servers, and storage devices are backed up to a secure off-site location before moving day. Securely pack and label devices – Clearly mark electronics and storage devices so they can be handled with care. Personally transport critical items – For highly sensitive drives or devices, consider moving them yourself, just as you would toiletries, medications, or other essentials. Plan for business IT needs – Larger companies should coordinate with their IT team for off-site storage and additional risk-mitigation strategies, especially when moving data centers or offices. At IMS Relocation, we take great care with all your valuables—but these extra steps will help ensure your sensitive information remains safe.
-
How can a business minimize downtime during a move?
The most effective approach is to schedule your move after hours, on a weekend, or during a holiday. With enough advance notice, IMS Relocation can accommodate your business’ needs and complete the move with minimal disruption. To further reduce downtime, we recommend: Backing up and securing all business data in advance Prioritizing items that should be “last out” and “first in” at your new location Staggering your move so departments or critical functions transition in phases By planning ahead and working closely with our team, you’ll keep your business running smoothly throughout the relocation process.
Items
-
Are there items that you are not allowed to transport or move?
Yes. For the safety of our customers and crew, as well as in compliance with legal requirements, IMS Relocation cannot transport hazardous materials, illegal substances, live animals, firearms, ammunition, or perishable/unsanitary items. While we can move valuable items such as jewelry, precious metals, or family heirlooms, we recommend transporting these personally or ensuring their value is declared for insurance purposes. Items we will not move include: Aerosol cans Flammable liquids and gases Paints, varnishes, paint thinners Matches and lighters Explosives or ammunition Loaded firearms Toxic substances Gardening chemicals Propane tanks Fertilizers Fire extinguishers Pool chemicals Household batteries Liquid bleach Rubbing alcohol When in doubt, use this rule of thumb: if it’s illegal, hazardous, perishable, or unsanitary, it should not go on the moving truck.
-
Can you disconnect and reconnect appliances?
No. Our movers are not licensed plumbers or electricians, which reduces risk to your home, belongings, and our staff. However, IMS Relocation partners with trusted, vetted third-party professionals who can safely handle appliance disconnection and reconnection. We’ll be happy to coordinate with these trusted partners ahead of your move.
-
How can I be sure that my valuables are properly protected during a move?
The best protection for your valuables starts with choosing the right moving partner. IMS Relocation has been serving Dallas–Fort Worth for over 30 years, completing thousands of successful moves and earning a strong reputation for care and reliability. We are fully licensed and insured—a must when entrusting your valuables to any mover. For added peace of mind, consider these tips: Catalog and insure high-value items – Depending on the value, you may want to purchase additional insurance coverage. Package securely – Ensure valuables are carefully wrapped and boxed or crated for speciality items. Keep small valuables with you – Items like jewelry, important documents, or family heirlooms are best kept on your person or moved personally. We also encourage you to check our reviews to see how we’ve helped other customers move confidently and securely.
-
What should I do if something gets damaged during my move?
IMS Relocation takes every precaution to protect your belongings, but in the unlikely event that something is damaged, we have processes in place to make it right. After your move, we recommend you: Inspect your items carefully. Document any damage immediately with photos and notes. Notify us as soon as possible.
