Moving Guide

Plan Your Move:

  • Create a moving binder:  Start a moving binder or digital folder to keep track of important documents, receipts, and notes.
  • Prepare a Budget.
  • Identify important deadlines: when you need to be out of your home and when you will have access to your new home. It is not recommended to schedule your move on your closing day!
  • Inventory household items: Take stock of your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or sell. We have a useful list of where to go to recycle and/or remove furniture in your area.
  • Boxes – How many do I need and where you should get them?

Things to Consider:

  • Understanding your moving quote.
  • Self-pack vs. professional packing services? Know the difference between professional and personal packing services and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Identify any appliances that will need to be disconnected and re-connected.  Here is some useful information on how to DIY.
  • Take an inventory of your valuables.
  • Secure Important Documents.
  • Book your move.
  • If you are purchasing a new home, it is recommended to avoid purchasing expensive items, opening new credit cards or changing jobs leading up to your closing.

The Move Day is Coming:

3 Weeks Before Move:
  • Notify important parties: Inform your current and future utility providers, post office, and any other relevant parties about your upcoming move. Alert service providers (internet, cable, utilities) about your move and arrange for transfers or cancellations.
  • Check out our area served information for helpful resources in your area
2 Weeks Before Move:
  • Finish packing: Pack most of your belongings, leaving out only essentials.
  • Confirm moving the details with your moving company.
  • Properly dispose of items that cannot be moved, such as hazardous materials. Check out our area served guides for locations near you.
  • Make arrangement for pets and children on moving and packing days.
1 Week Before Move:
  • Pack essentials bag with items you’ll need for the first few days in your new home.
  • Confirm the moving day and/or packing schedule with your moving company
  • Confirm utilities: Ensure that utilities are set up and ready at your new residence.

Moving Day:

  • Double-check everything by walking through each room, checking cabinets and drawers and any furniture to ensure nothing is left behind.
  • Have important documents on hand such as IDs, passports, and moving paperwork, easily accessible.
  • Supervise the move: Be present or have a representative available to supervise the movers.
  • Perform a final cleaning of your old home before leaving. We will have a resource guide on what needs to be done.
  • Make sure any children or pets have supervision arrangements for the day of your move. We also recommend moving any plants on your own.

You’ve Arrived:

  • Unpack essentials and gradually work through the rest.
  • Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration with your new address. Link to Texas sites.
  • Explore your new area: Familiarize yourself with the new neighborhood and locate important services. Any school or neighborhood guides, we can repost here.
