What To Know Before Moving Into an HOA Community
We’ve all heard stories about HOA leaders running amok with unruly or unreasonable regulations. Some of the anecdotes are laughable while others are more daring and concerning. However, these accounts are rarely the rule and more often the exception. HOAs do have their upsides and appeal to many. It’s just important that you’re prepared before your move. Here’s what to know before moving into an HOA community.
Know What is Expected When Moving to an HOA Community
Before moving to an HOA community, do your due diligence. Many homeowners appreciate the structure and benefits that a Homeowners’ Association can provide. You might often find and appreciate the look of a well-maintained neighborhood that puts a strong focus on protecting property values as well as mediating neighborly disputes and timely snow or trash removal. Many HOAs offer communal swimming pools, clubhouses, gyms and even gated security. All of this is wrapped up in a convenient monthly, quarterly or semi-annually homeowner fee.
This being said, there are some residents who don’t find this fee to be very inconvenient as the expense might not be well-justified. These dues can range from modest to mind-boggling. You will likely also discover that your potential new HOA also presents a few other limitations.
As an example, HOA community rules might prevent you from painting your house a certain color. You might not be allowed to install those handy solar panels you’ve always dreamed about. You might even be instructed when and where to park your car on your own property. Failure to abide by these limitations can result in fines or even liens against your property.
At this point, you might note that moving into an HOA can present unexpected challenges. There are times when HOA leaders might become overly vocal about regulations and residential concerns. This can lead to building tensions among neighbors and there are a few times when legal actions are taken. That often includes attorneys, which, of course, means additional expenses. Obviously, this would be an extreme and highly unusual situation but a quick Google search will show you how an HOA world can get a little sideways at times.
Finding Comfort in the HOA Middle Road
When researching homeowners’ association tips before you move into an HOA, you will likely find that every community is different. Some of these organizations are highly social and are very easy to work with. Others might operate on a more private level. The recommendation here is to simply ask your realtor and, when possible, current residents of your intended HOA. They will be able to provide a stronger understanding of the HOA atmosphere and how responsive those board members might be to your needs and the needs of other homeowners.
You also need to educate yourself on the bylaws of the HOA. Ideally, you’ll do this prior to purchasing the home, but it’s also important prior to your move. Some communities have requirements for both moving trucks and storage containers. You also want to be wary about rules for parking in an HOA community prior to your move. Pet owners, in particular, will want to fully understand the bylaws of their new community.
