How Far in Advance Should You Book a Long-Distance Move?
Just thinking about your long-distance move can be dizzying. There’s a lot to take in and the distance itself can seem daunting at times. However, there are ways to alleviate the pressures involved when it comes to your long-distance move. One way is to give yourself plenty of time to make that move happen. So, just how far in advance should you book a long-distance move?
The recommendation is to book your long-distance move six-to-eight weeks in advance. However, this can vary depending on specific situations such as the distance of the move or even the time of the year. Let’s consider how these factors can affect your move.
T’is the Season
Moving seasonality cannot be ignored. Peak moving season happens from May to September, so if your moving schedule involves the late spring, summer or very early fall then you might want to consider booking at least eight weeks out. Movers get particularly busy in the summer season.
Likewise, if your move happens during the off-season, being October through April, you could more easily book that move four-to-six weeks in advance. Because the movers will have a lighter schedule, they will be more available to accommodate you and your long-distance move.
This being said, you may also need to factor in the overall distance of your move. If you are moving across the country, then the recommendation is to book eight-to-twelve weeks ahead of that long-distance move.
Your Big International Move
Many realize too late what is truly involved in an international move. Often, it’s difficult enough to cross a border on your own. Keep in mind that this time you will be bringing your family and all of your belongings.
Every border has its own regulations when it comes to dealing with a long-distance move or international crossing. As a result, there are additional complexities and logistical challenges that must be considered and then coordinated. The recommendation here is to book as much as three-to-four months in advance so that the paperwork can be processed well ahead of time.
What About Your Car or Family Vehicles?
Often, those involved in long-distance moves prefer to ship a vehicle instead of committing it to a long-term drive across the country (if even possible). This helps to keep the mileage low while also ensuring that your vehicle is not subject to any needless mechanical issues or wear-and-tear that comes with a long-distance move. Therefore, you might want to factor in your vehicle or vehicles when you choose to book your long-distance move.
